A law firm is seeking a Life Sciences Patent Agent for their Chicago, IL, office. The successful candidate will be responsible for various patent-related tasks and should have the necessary qualifications, experience, and skills.

Job Overview: The Life Sciences Patent Agent will be responsible for preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office, as well as conducting prior art searches and patentability analyses. They will engage in practice development activities to build and maintain client relationships and provide substantive client correspondence. The agent will also be involved in patent clearance studies, opinion projects, and various tasks related to converting applications and instructing local counsel for foreign filings.

Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Conduct prior art searches and perform patentability analyses.
  • Engage in IP due diligence activities.
  • Build and maintain client relationships through practice development efforts.
  • Prepare substantive client correspondence.
  • Instruct local counsel for foreign filings and Office Actions.
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and other patent-related opinion projects.
  • Convert prior provisional applications into utility applications.
  • Convert foreign-filed applications into . applications.
  • Convert . applications into foreign applications.
  • Study and analyze scientific or technical documents, including previously published patent documents, to assess patentability, novelty, and inventiveness.

Requirements:

  • An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a biological field, including Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or Biomedical Engineering with excellent academic credentials.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a practicing patent agent in the field of life sciences.
  • Registered to practice before the . Patent and Trademark Office.

Education:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a biological field.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the . Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills:

  • Ability to apply advanced concepts in any life sciences field, with particular emphasis and/or expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, and/or biochemistry.
  • Strong analytical skills for assessing patentability and conducting prior art searches.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship-building skills.
  • Legal knowledge related to patent prosecution.
  • Proficiency in converting various types of patent applications.
