A law firm in Washington, DC, is actively seeking an In-House Labor and Employment Counsel with a minimum of 8 years of experience. The ideal candidate will work closely with the HR team and firm leadership, providing legal advice on a range of labor and employment matters.

 

Job Overview:

The In-House Labor and Employment Counsel will serve as the internal expert on all US labor and employment laws, providing strategic legal guidance to HR professionals and Firm Management. This role involves advising on HR best practices compliance obligations and overseeing various employment-related legal matters, including litigation, employee investigations, and government audits.

 

Job Details:

  • Work with HR and firm leadership to provide attorney-client privileged legal advice on HR best practices and compliance obligations for US offices.
  • Advise on performance management, employee communications, policies and practices, severance agreements, employment agreements, leaves of absence, OFCCP and other federal contracting requirements, state reporting requirements, legal compliance, pay transparency, mandatory leave laws, and other relevant federal, state, or local laws.
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel's team, including the Employment Counsel, to respond to discovery requests, defend employment claims, handle government audits, wage gap analysis, and other dispute or enforcement matters.
  • Act as an internal expert on US labor and employment laws, communicating policies and agreements to HR professionals and Firm Management.
  • Research and advice on legal developments, preparing alerts, policies, and protocols for HR professionals and HR Compliance team members.
  • Provide guidance on non-standard employment terms, discipline and terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour compliance, EEO matters, and separation agreements.
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Development team and HR professionals to conduct required training.
  • Advise on the development and implementation of protocols to monitor and ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws and regulations.
  • Direct external statistical experts on topics such as pay equity and pay transparency.
  • Provide guidance on background check issues and compliance with client requirements.
  • Partner with Legal Risk Management and HR team to mitigate employment law-related legal risks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet Firm goals and objectives.

 

Requirements:

  • . degree from an accredited . law school.
  • Admission as a current member in good standing of a State Bar.
  • 8+ years of labor and employment experience.
  • Experience with employee investigations, employment litigation, and dispute resolution.
  • Deep expertise in EEO laws, wage and hour laws, union-related laws, OSHA, FMLA, ADA, OFCCP, Affirmative Action plans, pay transparency laws, employee data privacy laws, state and local leave laws, and other relevant federal, state, and local laws.
  • Understanding of federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Solid strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid commercial judgment, including the ability to anticipate, analyze, and make recommendations.
  • Knowledge of global laws and regulations pertaining to labor and employment law.
