Title Insurance Underwriting Counsel The candidate provide timely answers to legal and underwriting questions relating to title searches and/or title insurance coverage received from customers and staff. Assist residential and commercial underwriters in determining underwriting requirements and coverage in preparation of title commitments, policies, and endorsements. Field questions regarding 1031 Tax deferred exchange transactions from clients and staff. Review title applications, searches, commitments and opinions to insure compliance with underwriting requirements of title insurance carriers. Identify title defects and provide underwriting assistance to agency underwriters and settlement personnel as needed to resolve problems. Assist staff underwriters, settlement personnel and customers in clearing and resolving title issues. Determine if a survey is needed to provide requested coverage and assist in the survey review if applicable. Participate in marketing efforts as needed. Develop and maintain good relationships with clients. Review work performed by underwriting staff, giving feedback on performance. Assist in training and developing new underwriting staff members, and with the creation of training materials. Participate in annual performance evaluations of agency underwriting staff as requested by manager. Participate in the review, creation and revision of title, settlement and policy forms. Assist in the evaluation and monitoring of vendors. Assist agency management in achieving revenue and profit goals. Perform legal research when needed and publish newsletters, guidelines and training documents. Perform other duties assigned by manager. Assist with 1031 Presentations and seminars.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Juris Doctorate. Must have 5+ years work experience. Said experience should be related to title examination, real estate closings, and/or title underwriting although experience in related legal fields may be considered. Ability to travel as required. Knowledge of real estate law, governmental regulation, ALTA Best Practices, and escrow closing procedures is needed. Must have knowledge of 1031 exchange rules and transactions.
