Legal Assistant/Interpreter
Duties: Responsible for assisting clients in all of the various legal issues handled by the office, assisting the Managing Attorney with administrative duties, operations, and coordination of the Legal Services department, maintaining all of the caseload records for the office, and preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical reports based on those records . It is also responsible for providing interpretation services for Spanish speaking clients in their legal appointments. Reception duties: handling in-person, telephone, and email contact with the public, clients, volunteers, and donors efficiently and effectively. General administrative duties, including scheduling, typing, proof-reading, filing, supply maintenance and photocopying. Coordination of regularly scheduled legal clinics, including scheduling of volunteers and clients. Maintenance of confidential files and databases containing legal and personal information about LS volunteers and clients. Performance of client related work such as calling courts to research the status of a client’s case, communication with administrative agencies on a client’s behalf, and other such tasks under the supervision of an attorney. Assist the Director with producing periodic statistical reports on the ODLS caseload, clinic meetings, and volunteer and staff timesheets. Client intake, including initial interview and conflicts checks. Work cooperatively with other Mission departments as a team to efficiently and positively accomplish the work of the Mission. Strive to anticipate and proactively assist with the needs of the clinic and the workload of the ODLS Director. Attend and participate in all Mission, Division and Department meetings and trainings, as required. Any other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: AA/AS or equivalent years of experience required; Paralegal certification preferred. 2+ years of experience in a professional office environment required; Experience within a legal work setting is strongly preferred. Ability to successfully pass pre-employment drug and criminal background screenings. Sufficient fluency in Spanish to efficiently and accurately translate complex legal terms and concepts orally and in writing is required. High proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required. Excellent oral and written communication, grammar, attention to detail and organizational skills required. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, work under pressure and handle sensitive/difficult situations calmly and effectively required. Ability to work comfortably with the diverse clients served by ODLS required. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client/sensitive information required. Ability and willingness to work both independently and within a team setting required.
