Legal Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney
Responsibilities: Assist the Legal Department with managing and mentoring law school chapters and law firm attorneys, including monitoring case progress, providing expert legal advice, reviewing legal submissions, and conducting trainings, to ensure high-quality representation by pro bono teams. This work is primarily done remotely with teams from all across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Directly represent vulnerable refugees and SIV applicants by drafting United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) resettlement referrals, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) legal submissions, and visa applications. Review intake interview notes completed by volunteers and staff as part of intake process, and conduct intake interviews on sensitive cases as needed. Provide advice and counseling to refugees and SIV applicants in their UNHCR refugee status determination (RSD), USCIS refugee interviews, or U.S. Embassy visa interviews, as well as advocacy before other entities as needed. Collaborate with staff from field offices in Jordan and Lebanon on cases placed with pro bono teams and in-house cases for direct representation. Collaborate with the Litigation Department on any current and future high impact litigation efforts. Collaborate with the Policy Department to reform and improve the U.S. refugee and SIV processes. Assist with the management of legal interns, intake volunteers, and fellows.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelors and JD Degree or LLM required. Must be admitted to practice law in the United States. 1+ years of experience as an attorney providing direct legal services and/or working with immigration law. Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment. Must be highly organized and motivated, able to multi-task, manage a high volume workload, and have excellent time management skills. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a preference for experience working in diverse and international work environments. Sensitivity to client empowerment and to working with clients of all backgrounds, including LGBTI clients, survivors of trauma, and other vulnerable populations. Fluency in oral and written English. Fluency in a second language, particularly Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, or Spanish, is a plus. Knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
