Profile

Associate General Counsel Duties: (1) Working with outside counsel to ensure efficient and effective handling of GL/AL cases, including holding regular meetings to review the dockets and address concerns or issues affecting performance, actively engaging in defense of significant matters by overseeing strategy development and execution, reviewing and editing motions and legal briefs, assisting with obtaining settlement authority when necessary, and attending depositions, oral arguments on motions and trials. (2) Managing outside counsel budget by working with outside counsel to develop and implement best practices, maintain appropriate staffing levels, and negotiate mutually acceptable alternative fee arrangements. (3) Maintaining good working relationship with third party administrator (Sedgwick) through regular communications and meetings with claims representatives and their managers. Developing process improvements as necessary. (4) Serving as a liaison between outside counsel and third party administrator (Sedgwick), including facilitating discussions on case strategy and settlements, assisting with document collection and witness identification when necessary, and resolving disputes and differences of opinion concerning defense and/or settlement strategy. (5) Organizing and tracking information to produce GL/AL litigation-related reports and manage GL/AL litigation annual spend, including reports on trends in litigation, settlement statistics (settlements per month, average amounts, etc.). (6) Advising Managing Associate General Counsel, SVP of Litigation and other Senior Leaders on GL/AL cases that present significant financial exposure or risk of reputational harm, including providing assessments of the risk, updates on significant developments, and advice on strategy. (7) Identifying practices and policies that generate GL/AL lawsuits and working with business clients on practice and policy changes to minimize or eliminate the risks they pose.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Must have earned a JD Degree. 8+ years of practice in a law firm and/or in-house legal department. Must be active and in good standing with the state Bar where office will be located, or be eligible for an in-house license in that location. Demonstrated ability to thrive and lead in positions of responsibility, as a confident, self-starting, solution-oriented, Demonstrated ability to handle extremely sensitive and confidential information. Exceptionally strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Even better if have: Experience supervising and managing large volume of insurance defense work, including general and automobile liability tort cases.
