Assistant Federal Defender The candidate will be responsible for managing the 2255 Unit and report directly to the Executive Director. Will lead a team of lawyers, investigators, mitigation staff, and others. Responsible for Unit budgeting in collaboration with the Executive Director and Administrative Officer. Must be admitted to the practice of law in the highest court in the state where licensed and eligible for admission to the Federal Bar. Should preferably have experience dealing with mentally ill persons and 5+ years of capital defense litigation experience in trial, direct appeal, state post-conviction, or federal habeas corpus proceedings. Other related experience may be considered. Should be immediately able to undertake the hiring of other personnel; be skilled in managing the training and supervision of staff charged with the representation of death row prisoners; be a talented legal writer, a proven advocate, and a creative thinker; and have a track record of positive results leading teams comprised of multi-disciplinary, high functioning persons. A background in any area of mental health and/or social work is strongly preferred. Some management experience is preferred. Travel is required. Start Date: October 1, 2018.
