Attorney The candidate will engage in cutting-edge impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and education furthering the organization's mission. Impact litigation responsibilities include devising legal theories and litigation strategy; identifying and cultivating litigation opportunities, whether from legal Help Desk, referrals from private attorneys, media accounts, or in response to government action; conducting litigation in trial and appellate courts with a high degree of independence; providing amicus curiae support through brief writing and coordination; consulting with private lawyers who are handling matters related to organization's areas of expertise. In addition to litigation portfolio, may be called upon to analyze legislative proposals affecting the LGBT community or people living with HIV, often times under significant time pressure; track relevant legislative proposals; provide testimony; and work with stakeholders at the local, state, and national level. Cultivate relationships with key coalition partners and allied organizations and will pursue opportunities to share organization's organizational expertise, including presentations at legal conferences, teaching continuing legal education, interviews with print, radio, television, and web reporters, and other speaking engagements. Work collaboratively with colleagues in organization's Communications and Development Departments to advance knowledge about and gain support for organization's efforts to secure full legal and lived equality for LGBT people and everyone living with HIV.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have some experience. Should be able to demonstrate outstanding written and oral advocacy skills; the knowledge, technical skills and leadership capacity to develop and execute strategies to advance the civil rights of LGBT people and everyone living with HIV; the professional experience and cultural humility to effectively identify, interact with, and counsel current and prospective clients from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds; a record of excellent judgment; and the ability to operate with a high level of independence and initiative. Must have the ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for a wide variety of audiences. Prior work on behalf of the LGBT community and/or people living with HIV is a plus. Some experience working with historically marginalized communities (in a professional or volunteer capacity) is strongly preferred. Spanish language proficiency a plus. Some travel is required.
