Senior Staff Attorney - Clinic The candidate will supervise client intakes. Ensure the collection of information necessary to address clients’ legal issues and educate tenants regarding the legal system and the progress of an eviction lawsuit. Will prepare responsive pleadings, stay of execution requests, and other necessary pleadings. Evaluate and screen cases for appropriate referrals for direct representation by other legal services organizations. Prepare case summaries for court-ordered settlement conferences. Advocate for tenants and negotiate on their behalf with landlords and landlords’ attorneys in unlawful detainer actions. Provide support for volunteer attorneys and attorneys at other legal services organizations representing tenants. Work with attorneys and other firm staff to train and supervise volunteers and interns. Assist in the training, positive coaching, and professional development of staff and volunteers – including occasional teaching at volunteer trainings and occasional community events. Review legal documents with tenants; instruct them on filing these documents and how to prepare for hearings and settlement conferences. Perform other duties as assigned. California Bar Membership is needed. Should have 2+ years of experience representing tenants in all phases of the Unlawful Detainer, or 2 years of experience in legal advocacy on behalf of underrepresented people. Previous management experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and an interest in assisting diverse, low-income communities is needed. Excellent written and oral communication skills and computer literate is advantageous. Ability to assist clients in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, or Tagalog strongly preferred.
