Unit Director- Foreclosure Duties: Supervise three attorneys and two advocates. Works to combat predatory lending, prevent foreclosures and protect affordable homeownership by appearing on behalf of homeowners in settlement conferences, assisting homeowners with loan modifications, and litigating on behalf of homeowners facing foreclosure. Helping homeowners file Chapter 7 and 13 petitions, motion practice, adversary proceedings, and loss mitigation. Assist low-income debtors with pro se Chapter 7 petitions for bankruptcy relief. Will supervise our new Community Economic Development practice, which includes multiparty complex litigation, filing fair housing complaints with local and state human rights commissions, transactional work around the establishment of community land trusts, filing comments pursuant to the federal Community Reinvestment Act, and advising small businesses on legal matters. Supporting and supervising staff in the areas described above as well as development and supervision of complex litigation and systemic advocacy. Will include supervision of a weekly walk-in foreclosure and bankruptcy clinic in Supreme Court, where advice and brief services are provided. Grant reporting and administration, grant writing and ensuring compliance with organization policies and regulations. Will join the larger leadership community at Legal Services and will be expected to support organization-wide staff and initiatives.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Admission to New York Bar. A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color; Litigation advocacy experience in areas such as foreclosure prevention, consumer justice, fair housing, civil rights, economic justice, and/or bankruptcy; Ability to identify trends in our high volume of individual cases that could be addressed by strategic action of creative interventions; Ability to speak with people of diverse backgrounds, build trust with different people, treat people with respect, and identify clients’ needs quickly and accurately; Ability to effectively lead outreach, education, litigation and team projects; Excellent organization, writing, communication and people skills; and Experience with supervising legal work and working with large and diverse teams. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by Bronx residents is strongly preferred.
