Legal Assistant The candidate will provide fulltime legal support services to the USAO by providing a variety of legal support services directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (A USA) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services. This work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal and administrative activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and an ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned AUSA(s). Examines, prepares and processes a wide variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format. Reviews incoming materials and determines the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, etc. Obtains needed information from appropriate sources and submits drafted legal documents to the appropriate AUSA. With limited instructions from the AUSA, prepares responsive documents and completes variable aspects of recurring legal documents in conformance with the rules governing their style and format. Develops tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format. Lists cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs. Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants. Establishes and maintains a variety of files. Searches legal reference files for information needed by AUSAs. Separates, screens, selects, assembles, and organizes files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures. Performs docketing duties such as opening, updating and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. As necessary, searches database for required information. Maintains calendar of assigned active cases. Tracks filing and hearing dates. Develops and maintains suspense system for ongoing cases and informs the AUSA of pending dates and deadlines. Maintains calendar(s) of the AUSA(s) and provides reminders of commitments and court appearances. Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. Ensures proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have 3 years of experience in a professional office environment, preferably a legal environment. Undergraduate Degree preferred. The contractor must have good communication and organizational skills, the ability to deliver highest quality work under pressure, and knowledge of software used by the USAO (or the ability to acquire knowledge about the USAOâ€™s computer systems). The contractor must have the ability to prove U.S. citizenship and that the contractor personnel meet the Department of Justice residency requirements. Should have Good communication skills. Ability: Ability to review and analyze data and information from multiple sources. Ability to establish case/project files. Ability to enter and retrieve data from databases. Ability to prepare and format management reports; Ability to manipulate, transfer, compute and print information. Ability to prepare and correct reports and correspondence using word processing software. Schedule appointments. Answer inquiries regarding case-related information as maintained in the database. Answer inquiries regarding case-related status. Obtain additional information from other agencies/organizations. Provide admin info and assistance concerning case or file to other agencies or organizations.
