Law Clerk The candidate assist five Circuit Court (trial level) Judges with legal research and writing and mediate small claims disputes. Traditional law clerk duties are about 80% of the position, with about 20% dedicated to small claims mediation. Reviews motions and briefs submitted by counsel, in addition to conducting independent research. Based on research prepares memoranda, decisions, and orders for the judges. Advises judges on novel and unusual legal issues as they arise during hearings and trials. Responds to letters from attorneys and pro se litigants on behalf of the judges. Assists the judges with various other projects. Mediates all small claims cases in company which includes all landlord/tenant/eviction cases. Traditional law clerk duties are about 80% of the position, with about 20% dedicated to small claims mediation.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have completed Graduation from an accredited law school, preferably supplemented by research experience. Knowledge of landlord/tenant law is a plus. Excellent legal research and writing skills are a must.
Ability: Ability to perform legal research of a highly technical nature. Ability to express self clearly and concisely in verbal and written form. Ability to comprehend complex legal arguments, motions, briefs, decisions and directions. Ability to fairly and impartially mediate disputes. Ability to placate difficult litigants in Small Claims Court. Ability to work effectively with the general public, County officials and employees, particularly those in the legal profession.
