Attorney Conflict Public Defender The candidate will have very minimal support staff assistance. This position is an assistant public defender within the Conflict Defender Division. Primarily be responsible for representing indigent clients in dependent neglect matters. In addition, other case assignments be determined by the Conflict Division Administrator or his/her designee as described in the Montana Public Defender Act. Expected to exercise own professional judgment and provide competent indigent defense casework pursuant to the Office of the Public Defender Practice Standards. Duties include to case investigation and strategy, discovery review, motion work, plea negotiations, trial preparation and completion, and sentencing.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have JD degree from an ABA accredited law school. Should preferably have experience representing clients in felony and dependent neglect cases and who have a strong desire to work in indigent defense. Must be licensed to practice in Montana on date of hire. Must be knowledgeable of legal and court policies, procedures, practices, terminology and systems; state and federal laws; rules and regulations; principles and practices of law enforcement. Must have verbal and written communication, negotiation, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, the public, witnesses, judges/ court personnel, and law enforcement/prosecution personnel.
