VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) Staff Attorney The candidate will help victims of crime stabilize and recover by assisting clients with civil cases, connecting clients with social services, conducting legal research and writing, and coordinating outreaches. Will gather evidence, effectively represent clients in civil trials, draft legal documents, and advise clients about their legal rights. Interview clients and witnesses as well as handle other details in preparation for client legal representation. Represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies. Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community. Be involved with outreach and community education and work with the community to further the mission of organization. May supervise and coordinate activities of subordinate legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers. Be expected to travel extensively, attend evening legal clinics, participate in community education, and handle a case load, including major litigation.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should be a graduate of an accredited law school. Should be licensed to practice in Texas. Prior legal services or public interest experience is preferred. Bilingual (Spanish and English) skills are desired. Moot court experience, mock trial experience, and law journal experience is an asset. Demonstrated interest in public interest work and community service is needed.
