Legal Advocacy Counsel (Criminal) Duties: Working under the supervision of the department’s Vice President, is principally responsible for providing “Second Chair†services to law enforcement and prosecutors handling animal cruelty and animal fighting cases nationwide. Counsel will collaborate closely with other departments that assist with criminal investigations and prosecutions, including the Field Investigations and Response, Forensic Sciences, and Anti-Cruelty Behavior teams. May also assist with civil litigation, preparation of amicus curiae briefs, and legislative research and analysis. Under the supervision of the Vice President, provide backup legal assistance to prosecutors and law enforcement including: legal research, evidence review, witness preparation for hearings and trials, and drafting of search warrants, motions, jury instructions, bond/forfeiture petitions, legal memoranda, appellate briefs and other legal documents. Collaborate with other departments to ensure the effective deployment of organizational resources on criminal investigations and prosecutions, including the Field Investigations & Response, Forensic Sciences, and Anti-Cruelty Behavior teams, by providing services such as case review, witness preparation, and review of investigative and expert reports. Assist in the planning, preparation, and presentation of legal proceedings in addition to or as substitutes for criminal prosecutions where appropriate, including writs of prohibition and mandamus, declaratory judgments, and requests for injunctive relief. Provide training to other departments and external agencies on animal cruelty investigations and prosecutions. Develop internal protocols for the criminal case work. May also assist other attorneys in the Legal Advocacy department with civil litigation and legislative research and analysis. Collect and report program data. Assist in supervision of pro bono counsel and legal interns.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree. Admission to the Bar in at least one state. 4 years of experience as a criminal prosecutor or criminal defense lawyer. Trial and/or appellate practice experience. Working knowledge of criminal law and procedure. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, Excellent computer skills (including familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, document organization and deposition summary software), Superior communication and negotiation skills, Superior legal writing, research, and oral advocacy skills. Familiarity with animal cruelty laws. Familiarity with national animal welfare issues.
