Biological Scientist, GS 05 - 09 The candidate: Performs project planning activities including scheduling, organizing and executing field data collection projects related to natural resource inventory. Collects data needed to carry out biological science investigations. Develops work plans that include time and cost estimates, and the materials, supplies and equipment to accomplish a study. Organizes, verifies and refines the data collected. Conducts extensive forest land inventories to determine such things as plot location accuracy and accessibility (locates remote field sites using aerial photographs, topographic maps, compass and GPS); species composition (count and measurement of the number, species, size, quality, cull and other characteristics of sample trees); examines the classified ownership, forest type, stand size, stocking, cover class, natural and anthropogenic treatments and disturbances, forest insects and disease, and other items as specified in the Forest Inventory and Analysis national/regional field guide procedures. Uses botanical keys to identify plants encountered and assists in the collection and preservation of specimens. Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder, uploads and edits data, and completes accurate and concise plot summaries of all field visits. Field assignments include managing crews in measuring plot data and collecting samples for analyses. Responsibilities includes establishing and communicating guidelines and performance requirements to employees; preparing schedules for completion of work and approving leave; conducting formal performance reviews; and identifying and providing for the developmental and training needs of employees. Traveling is required.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have the following qualifications:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional education and/or experience are required for the grade(s) specified.

For GS-5: Must meet the basic education requirements described above are fully qualified for the GS-5 entry grade

For GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: experience building work schedules, and logistical planning for ecological projects,) collecting forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements; obtaining data on tree growth, forest type, stand size and stand age; and producing routine reports and summaries of field visits.

OR

One full year of graduate level education. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work in fields such as forestry, forest ecology, botany, biology, ecology.

OR

An appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience described above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

For GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: experience managing forest inventory or resource monitoring projects (including development of flexible work plans that include anticipated workforce needs, time and cost estimates); making recommendations for performance standards and measures, assessing employee performance, and making recommendations for employee improvement including identifying training needs. Utilizing field observations, aerial imagery, and historical site information for land use classification; and analyzing forest inventory data for accuracy and compliance with established protocol.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., in related fields described above for GS-7. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
