Judicial Law Clerk The clerk will work at the Trial Court level, and gain insight into court processes and the administration of justice. Will work directly with a District Court Judge performing legal research and drafting memoranda and orders. Work on a variety of assignments and observe many different types of court proceedings. Use legal research and writing skills, support a judge unit in court processes and observe all types of court calendar and proceedings. Review, study and research laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities. Prepare legal memoranda, statement of issues involved and proposed orders, including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge. Compile references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations. Confer with judge concerning legal questions, construction of documents and granting of orders. Attend court sessions to hear oral arguments. Prepare and summarize case files in advance of hearings and monitor cases under advisement. Prepare jury instructions and verdict forms. Respond to phone calls and written inquiries from public and attorneys. Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D. degree is required. Should have knowledge of: general law, state law, established precedent, and sources of legal reference; court practices and procedures; and legal terminology and concepts. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of people, including attorneys and pro se parties is required. Ability to research complex legal problems or questions and apply legal principles is needed.
