Litigation Paralegal - Environmental/Products Liability (financial district) The candidate will support the Firm's Environmental Group environmental (defense-side) and products liability cases. Paralegals in the environmental department assist the attorneys as case managers. Primary tasks for which they are responsible include initial case set-up, information management, investigation and factual analysis, and research. Assist in all aspects of discovery, in preparation of motions, briefs and legal memoranda, and in preparing attorneys for witness interviews, depositions, hearings, arbitration, mediation and trial. Case Information Management: Coordinates the organization of case materials and files to meet the unique needs of each case. Assembles files, medical records, pleadings, transcripts and document summaries into comprehensive information management systems, using Microsoft Excel and database software. Prepares summaries, abstracts, chronologies of events, casts of characters and statistical reports using the case materials. Coordinates and works with the Practice Support Department as needed. Investigation and Factual Analysis: Traces documents and other physical evidence. Locates and assists in interviewing witnesses. Conducts factual research, including examining public records, public websites and databases, and reviewing and analyzing evidentiary material. Prepares fact memoranda to summarize findings. Discovery: Assists in all phases of discovery. Interrogatories: Assists in the preparation of interrogatories. Reviews responses from other parties and checks for completeness. Summarizes or codes answers and develops further questions raised by the answers. Drafts or assists in drafting answers or objections to interrogatories received from other parties. Requests for Admission: Assists in the preparation of requests for admission. Reviews responses from other parties and checks for completeness. Summarizes or codes responses and develops further requests raised by the responses. Drafts or assists in drafting responses or objections to requests for admission received from other parties. Depositions: Reviews documents to identify potential deponents. As requested, arranges depositions, preparing notices, subpoenas or subpoenas duces tecum. Coordinates the court reporter, videographer and conference room arrangements. Retrieves and organizes case materials relevant to each witness who is to be deposed and prepares witness files or binders for the attorney(s). Identifies potentially relevant documents to use as exhibits. Attends certain depositions to handle exhibits and take notes. Summarizes or indexes deposition transcripts or makes arrangements for this to be done. Identifies testimony for key issues, using manual and/or computer assisted methods. Compiles, reviews and indexes deposition exhibits. Tracks deposition transcript corrections and witness signatures. Document Productions - Propounding Requests: Assists in the preparation of notices to produce documents. Attends document productions as needed. Reviews documents produced by other parties and checks for compliance with document requests. Arranges for the reproduction and/or coding and scanning of produced documents. Drafts subpoenas duces tecum to obtain relevant documents from non-parties. Integrates documents from other parties and non-parties into the manual and/or computer-based systems, coordinating and working with the Practice Support Department as needed. Prepares fact memoranda regarding the production and reproduction of documents. Prepares status reports and recommends follow-up activities. Based on the documents received, prepares and/or updates chronologies, fact summaries and witness files as warranted. Coordinates with government agencies to obtain relevant records. Document Productions - Responding to Requests: Reviews notices to produce sent by other parties and prepares index of documents that are needed in order to respond to the requests. Searches electronic and hard-copy case materials for the relevant documents. Obtains documents from clients as needed. Under supervision of case attorney(s), screens documents for relevance, privilege and work product, as well as for compliance with the document requests. Assembles and maintains privilege and document production logs. Supervises the review and photocopying of originals by opposing counsel. Prepares fact memoranda regarding the production and reproduction of documents. Prepares status reports and recommends follow-up activities. Research: Conducts or assists in conducting legal research. Finds relevant cases, law review articles and statutes. Researches issues of fact and compiles substantive support for contentions in statements of fact, legal briefs, interrogatory responses, and other pleadings and documents. Prepares memoranda analyzing research results. Motions, Briefs and Legal Memoranda: Cite checks and proofreads documents, confirming quotations and the validity and form of citations. Formats documents, finalizing the tables of authorities and tables of contents. Drafts or assists in drafting motions and stipulations regarding extensions of time, dismissal, and other procedural issues. Prepares documents for filing with the court. Paralegals are familiar with Blue Book and Yellow Book procedures, and skilled at using Westlaw and LEXIS software for all cite checking related duties. Settlements: Assists in the preparation of materials and data for settlement conferences. Assists in the preparation of releases, motions and stipulations for dismissal, motions regarding jury fee refunds, settlement sheets, affidavits, and other settlement-related documents. Trial, Hearing, Arbitration and Mediation: Prepares and organizes exhibits and drafts exhibit roster. Organizes trial/arbitration/mediation notebooks and binders. Assists in preparing witness lists, subpoenas, pre-trial orders, and jury instructions. Arranges witnesses' attendance. Assists in preparing trial briefs by retrieving cases, drafting factual portions of briefs, finding references from deposition transcripts and other documents, cite checking and proofreading, and filing the brief. Coordinates or assists in the preparation of visual aids and supporting documentation. Attends the trial, hearing, arbitration or mediation and takes notes, coordinates and monitors exhibits and exhibit roster, and monitors objections. Sets-up and coordinates any on or off-site trial facilities. Post Trial Activities: Summarizes trial transcripts. Assists with the preparation of any post-trial motions and appellate documents, and coordinates and works with outside vendors who are providing related trial support services. Cooperates with Team Efforts: Demonstrates effective teamwork and provides assistance to other Paralegals as time permits. Works cooperatively and collaboratively with other departments and individuals in the firm. Attends Paralegal Department meetings, as well as Practice Group meetings in the appropriate practice area. Productivity: Prepares and submits time sheets on a timely basis. Paralegals are expected to log 1640 client-billable hours per year. Time logged to certain assigned practice development and pro bono matters may be credited towards this billable hour requirement. Paralegals are expected to work overtime as required. Professional Development: Paralegals are responsible for complying with the continuing education and other requirements set forth in the California Business and Professions Code, Section 6450 et seq. Other: Prepares correspondence as needed. Prepares billing memorandum narratives. In class action cases, monitors general status of class members and coordinates class-action correspondence. Performs other related duties as assigned.

A Bachelor's Degree required. A certificate from an ABA-approved Paralegal training program is preferred. A Paralegal certificate shows a commitment to the profession but does not take the place of case clerk/paralegal work experience. Toxic tort or product liability case experience is preferred. Case management experience essential, ideally experience managing large document intensive cases and databases. Familiarity with procuring and reviewing medical records and/or experience coordinating with governmental agencies to obtain records and information is a plus. Must have 3 years' experience as a Paralegal/Case Clerk. 2 years' experience working on environmental and toxic tort/product liability cases desirable. Should have demonstrated knowledge of the procedures, terminology and documents relating to complex litigation matters. Must have strong organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. Should have proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software (Word, Outlook, Excel), LEXIS, Westlaw, and code-based retrieval systems. Must have proficiency in the use of a document review platform such as Relativity, Ringtail or Concordance. Should have excellent analytical skills and the ability to understand and summarize case-related documents.
