Associate General Counsel - Employment Law The candidate will provide employment counseling on a wide array of HR and business initiatives, practices and policies that have employee implications, including hiring, performance management, employee relations, internal investigations, disability, ADA and FMLA matters, terminations and restructuring, contractor issues, workers compensation, wage and hour, unemployment and immigration. Draft and edit employment-related documents and processes. Draft position statements to the EEOC, state human rights organizations, DOL and other administrative agencies. Represent company before federal and local agencies. Support employment litigation with outside counsel, including oversight of budgets. Team with HR to implement employment policies and practices. Draft and support employment, labor and immigration training to ensure proactive and ongoing compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Review and negotiate employment-related provisions in commercial contracts. Advise on health and welfare benefits to ensure ongoing compliance with ERISA, and to align with health and welfare plan best practices. Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned and occasional travel.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have strong academic record with a J.D. Degree from an accredited law school. Must have admission and good standing of at least one state Bar. Must have 6+ years of employment law experience, including counseling, claim response, litigation and investigations. 4+ years of employment litigation experience is needed. 1+ years of In-house experience is required. Should have experience proactively identifying and assessing legal and reputational risk in support of US corporations, and recommending practical solutions that balance risk with business objectives. Knowledge or willingness to learn workers’ compensation and federal contracting laws is preferred. Benefits experience is a plus. Should ideally be deep legal expertise in the laws of New York, California, Illinois and/or Florida. Prior collaboration with a wide-range of business clients in various capacities within a complex, global organization is preferred.
