Staff Attorney Duties: Provide fair housing intake, education/referral, counseling, and advocacy services, including interviewing witnesses, collecting and analyzing documents, compiling case records and tester reports, researching public records, researching and analyzing legal issues, providing limited scope representation to victims of housing discrimination, drafting written materials such as settlement demands, accommodation requests, and mediation briefs, and referring cases for enforcement action. Staff pop-up clinics to provide brief fair housing legal services. Advocate for complainants in administrative agency proceedings, including negotiating for resolutions and representing clients in mediation, and provide support in litigating agency cases. Engage in community outreach and education on fair housing issues, and act as the agency liaison with government officials and other organizations. Contribute to program development and administration, including drafting funding proposals, and work collaboratively with other agency personnel, funding sources, and other nonprofit agencies in the community. Track data and compile quarterly reports as required by funders. Assist in other duties as assigned to further the interests and mission of the agency.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Candidate must have a demonstrated desire to work to further civil rights protections, and a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for, diverse individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, sex, color, national origin, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability. Membership and good standing in the California Bar is required. Capacity to work and think independently, proactively, and without close supervision. Ability to handle an active caseload and manage short timelines. Excellent written communication skills. Strong analytical thinking and organizational skills. Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain accurate records. Creative problem-solving skills and a strong desire to help people. Fluency in Spanish required.
