Description

The purpose of this position is to provide expertise and direct the Association’s ethics program.

Responsibilities

  1. Direct ASHA’s ethics program including the ethics complaint disciplinary process under the Code of Ethics to ensure consistency, due process, and fairness to persons under investigation, to persons who lodge complaint, and others; assist the Board of Ethics (and National Office staff) regarding all aspects of disciplinary policies and procedures, and serve as an objective National Office resource for Complainants and Respondents during complaint adjudication proceedings.
  2. Analyze ethical problems presented by members and certificate holders to assist them in reaching appropriate decisions, and provide the Board of Ethics information about trends in ethics inquiries as a guide for its planning and implementation of ethics education activities and monitoring of the Code of Ethics.
  3. Serve as a resource to National Office staff on ethics and ethical ramifications and consequences, and represent the Association’s ethics program to outside organizations.
  4. Direct work groups of professional and support staff in the execution of projects related to ethics, ensure accurate dissemination of information regarding the ethics program and its activities, and be an ethics resource for Association Leaders.
  5. Advise and assist the Board of Ethics in all matters related to the board’s charges of monitoring and revising the Code of Ethics and ethics education activities. 

Qualifications

Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • Possessing a graduate degree in audiology or speech-language pathology; additionally, a law degree is preferred.
  • 5-10 years’ experience within a legal/regulatory/administrative environment dealing with disciplinary activity as well as standard setting, e.g., state or federal systems, other private/public credentialing systems

Scope and Depth of Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Direct work teams to accomplish projects as well as to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers
  • Research archival/legal/regulatory matters
  • Manage a computer database system
  • Develop complex and varied written materials  

Scope and Depth of Non-Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Organize and prioritize multiple and complex projects and tasks
  • Independently identify and manage sensitive and confidential matters
  • Lead projects as well as work cooperatively with staff and volunteers
  • Provide accurate, in-depth information about diverse member problems (e.g., ethical, legal, and employment)
  • Communicate complex procedures, requirements and sensitive information verbally and in writing
