Legal Compliance Attorney The candidate will assist firm and agency staff in the resolution of issues, including complex legal and policy-related issues, arising on individual cases. Will provide legal advice on statutes, regulations, policies and procedure. Provide guidance on decisions related to safety, services and permanency planning. Draft and edit e-mails, motions, legal documents, memoranda, policies, and procedural and legal guidance. Develop expertise and serve as an FCLS specialist on a variety of issues including: permanency, medical consents, delinquency practice, Close to Home, Interstate Compact, voluntary placements, OPWDD and OMH, visiting, youth transitioning out of care, LGBTQ, housing, discharges, child care, Medicaid, and others. Facilitate positive communication, collaboration, and sharing of accurate up-to-date information among and between FCLS, other divisions, and provider agencies. Assist attorneys and case-planners in preparing for and achieving effective court appearances. Attend and convene case conferences and meetings with provider agencies, outside counsel, various child welfare stakeholders and others as needed. Provide trainings on a variety of subjects relating to permanency and service planning, to FCLS attorneys, other divisions, and provider agencies in coordination with the Legal Training Unit. Represent FCLS and firm by serving on cross-divisional and inter-agency workgroups. Serve as a collaborative team member in a unit of experienced attorneys who work jointly on many issues; and represent firm in Court and other forums as needed.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have admission to the New York State Bar. Should have 1 year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any State Bar; or 6 months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086). Must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. For level I: Must have 1 year of experience at Assignment Level I or 2 years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the Bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. For level II: Must have 2 years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or 3 years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the Bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. Should preferably possess the following: comprehensive knowledge and understanding of firm’s policies and procedures and relevant child welfare and juvenile justice laws, New York State statutes and regulations; a demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; demonstrated and effective organizational and problem-solving skills.
