ProfileAssociate Director/Director/Senior Director and Senior Associate GC, Patent Duties: Helping to build the company’s global intellectual property portfolios through strategic procurement and management of intellectual property rights, as well as providing people leadership. The Associate Director/Director/Senior Director may have accountability for strategic oversight of a discrete functional patent area (typically a therapeutic area), including driving strategic direction and overseeing workload and resource allocation in the area. Through close partnering with clients at multiple levels of management across multiple research and business functions, the Associate Director/Director/Senior Director will build, maintain and help to defend the Company`s intellectual property interests. Providing clear, informed and sophisticated counselling to clients in all phases of drug research, development and commercialization, including stakeholders engaged in research& development, manufacturing, business development/partnering, portfolio and lifecycle management and commercialization activities; Rendering legal opinions with respect to patentability, validity, and freedom to operate; directly and indirectly supervising a substantial patent portfolio, including preparation, prosecution, maintenance and/or defence of US and foreign patent filings and patent office administrative actions (e.g. Inter partes reviews, interferences, reexaminations, post grant reviews, and oppositions); directly and indirectly conducting due diligence assessments, and counselling based on these assessments, including freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses, and risk evaluation and mitigation; Managing external relationships with outside counsel and collaborators, including substantial interactions within a multicultural global patent function; Supporting intellectual property-related transactional projects (including mtas, cdas, research collaborations, and licensing agreements) and litigation activities; Being accountable for delivering on-time, on-target and within-budget team goals and results; Serving as a trusted advisor and partner to the business in navigating an evolving business and legal landscape; managing attorneys/agents directly or in a matrix management setting, including performance and talent management, coaching and mentoring responsibilities.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: An advanced degree in biological sciences or chemistry is required; Ph.D. preferred. A United States law degree (JD Degree ) is required. Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. 12+ years of experience in biopharma patent prosecution and counseling in a biopharma corporate setting and/or law firm. Agreement and transactional experience is desired. Track record of success in managing a team of 10+attorneys/agents; at least four years managing attorneys/agents with proven effectiveness leading and managing teams and projects.
