Legal Assistant III Duties : Performs highly complex (senior-level) legal assistant work. Work involves coordinating legal activities; researching, analyzing, investigating, and drafting legal documents; and assisting attorneys with case management. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Participates as a legal team member in regulatory enforcement actions litigated before the State Office of Administrative Hearings. Conducts investigations and interviews. Attends depositions and administrative hearings. Drafts and edits agency orders, discovery documents, pleadings, motions, briefs, legal correspondence, and related documents. Prepares evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and documents for use in administrative hearings. Conducts legal and factual research and analysis using statutes, rules, case law, administrative records, and practice resources. Coordinates and manages legal caseloads for team members. Participates in meetings to discuss legal issues and activities. Assists with rulemaking activities governed by the Administrative Procedures Act. Assists with responses to requests governed by the Public Information Act. Assists with meetings governed by the Open Meetings Act. Assists with records management and retention governed by the Government Code. Prepares travel vouchers, purchase order requests, and other administrative forms for the legal department in compliance with agency policy. Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information. Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity. Performs related work as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification : The candidate should have Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree. Must have Completion of an accredited legal assistant or paralegal program. Must have 2+ years of experience as a legal assistant or in a legal support role. Strong writing skills is required. Preferred Qualification : Graduation from an accredited educational institution with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or other advanced degree. Experience assisting attorneys with litigation. Experience working for a regulatory agency. Experience assisting attorneys appearing before the State Office of Administrative Hearings, or other administrative court. Knowledge of the Administrative Procedures Act, State Office of Administrative Hearings rules, Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, Texas Rules of Evidence, Government Code, Finance Code, Business & Commerce Code, Open Meetings Act, and Public Information Act. Knowledge of and experience in consumer credit, financial industries, motor vehicle sales finance, credit access business, pawn transactions, crafted precious metal transactions, property tax lending, loans, debt collection, manufactured housing, real estate, refund anticipation loans, insurance, retail installment transactions, and secured transactions. Ability to use spreadsheets, databases, and information tools. Ability to understand and perform financial calculations and business math. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
