Assistant City Attorney I Criminal Division The candidate will prepare and handle arraignments, pre-trials, trials and other appearances on petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor cases. Draft and prepare criminal complaints, prepare written motions, memoranda and appellate briefs. Work with investigators, victim/witness assistants, and paralegals to prepare cases for trial. Argue motions, appellate issues, and cases at trial. Respond to inquiries from law enforcement, criminal justice partners, and members of the public. Conduct legal research related to criminal law issues as required. Advise law enforcement personnel and City departments. Prepare appeals of district court decisions. Perform other duties as assigned. Attorneys with a demonstrated interest in criminal law are encouraged to apply. Experience through internships or specific course work would be helpful. Should have JD degree from an accredited law school. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota at time of hire and throughout employment with the City Attorney's Office. Should preferably have experience in representing a public entity as a lawyer or student attorney. Contributor to, or editor of, a law review or law journal is a plus. Should preferably have Jury or court trial experience, particularly in criminal cases. Experience in a judicial clerkship is a plus. Should preferably have experience in researching and drafting legal memoranda and/or motions. Should preferably have excellent writing skills. Fluency in a foreign language (e.g., those used by the City's immigrant and refugee population such as Hmong, Lao, Oromo, Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese) is desired.
