Tax, Benefits and Estates Paralegal The candidate will be helping to manage and organize materials and information relating to tax aspects of matters, transactions, and tax controversy matters. Researching ERISA, IRC, and DOL questions as requested by attorneys. Preparing and reviewing materials for government filings, including applications for determination letters, voluntary correction applications and Form 5500s, as well as various IRS and state-level forms. Updating and maintaining inventory of plan documents, plan amendments and important filings and communications for clients. Drafting retirement plans, welfare plans, amendments and summaries for attorney review. Responding to issues with QDROS. Assisting in preparation of tax exemption filings, pre-screening applications and preparing submissions for tax exempt status. Managing response process for DOL/IRS and state regulatory agency requirements and exams. Conducting legal research and analysis of Tax and ERISA requirements related to retirement plans. Reviewing, indexing, and/or summarizing document production, depositions, hearing transcripts, FOIA production from IRS, and client-related documentations. Assisting with trial exhibits and preparation, drafting of correspondence and court filings, maintaining electronic files, conducting research, and scheduling conferences, client related meetings and other court appearances. Bachelor's Degree or paralegal certificate or designations. 3+ years of experience as a paralegal or in other legal/tax services roles. Strong oral and written communication skills. Proficient using Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word, and other database and document assembly software. Detail-oriented, efficient, and able to coordinate multifaced projects with minimum supervision. Proficiency in Lexis or Westlaw and web-based research strongly preferred. Ability to problem solve, set priorities, and ask questions when needed. Ability to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate persistence to overcome obstacles. Experience with the Internal Revenue Code and ERISA preferred. Experience with health and welfare benefit compliance and familiarity with IRS and DOL rules including ERISA, ACA, COBRA and HIPAA preferred. Working knowledge of the general retirement plan qualification rules under IRC Section 401 and ERISA preferred.
