Paralegal The candidate will assist attorneys with legal and other research and drafting, preparing and filing of documents in state and federal court, administrative agencies, and legislative bodies, and working with clients and within coalitions to advance firm’s Legal’s cutting-edge impact litigation, policy advocacy, and educational work. Will work primarily at the intersection of LGBTQ people and people living with HIV with government agencies and court systems, with a special emphasis on youth in child welfare and juvenile justice systems, youth experiencing homelessness, and issues facing transgender and nonbinary youth and adults. Will be providing legal and administrative support to attorneys including: the production of legal briefs and cite-checking; Preparing other legal filings; Performing legal and non-legal research; Helping to ensure compliance with all applicable court rules, and to maintain case files and other organizational systems; Drafting correspondence; Contacting court personnel, other attorneys and advocates, and others as necessary; Assisting in maintaining client relationships; Providing general administrative support to members of the Legal Department; Supporting the administration of work groups and coalitions at the state and national level; Supporting the administration of judicial and other training programs; Preparing presentations and other educational materials.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills; Must be motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, self-starting, dependable, able to work well under pressure, a team player, computer-literate; Should have prior legal support work is highly desired, and a willingness to develop the specialized knowledge about the legal system and legal documents necessary to perform duties in a law office setting is essential. Must have experience developing materials and delivering training and presentations. Prior experience working with systems serving youth and/or state court systems or lived experience in out-of-home care systems is preferred. Knowledge of issues facing transgender and non-binary people and/or prior experience working with transgender and nonbinary people is preferred. Should know Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Electronic court filing systems (including the federal judiciary’s Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system and Adobe Acrobat or LexisNexis or Westlaw.
