Labor and Employment Counsel Manager The candidate will serve as legal advisor on Employment law issues to HR and business leaders and others in the legal organization. Will provide legal support on complex employee relations matters and employment law projects. Serve as legal advisor and educator to business leaders, HR, Inclusion and Diversity, Marketing, Recruiting and other legal professionals, on managing risk associated with employment laws in the US, including Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA and the ADEA. Contribute to development of internal policies, guidelines, toolkits, and packaged knowledge on Employment legal and business issues for the North America region, including updating policies and processes to reflect legal developments and operational changes. Support strategic projects throughout North America, advising HR, Legal and business operations management as appropriate, and develop guidelines and templates for internal clients. Provide operational and strategic support to Procurement in relation to risks associated with contractors. Counsel employee relations and business leaders on pre-litigation matters, in conjunction with external counsel, working in close collaboration with the North American litigation team. Manage and oversee outside counsel relationships with law firms in the region, including managing budgets. Counsel, guide, train and support junior through senior levels of Legal attorneys within region as appropriate, particularly attorneys in legal contracting services to ensure best practices are incorporated in legal drafting. Occasional travel, primarily within the US, is required.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have a Law / J.D. degree and active license to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction. Must have 5+ years of experience practicing employment law as an attorney. Knowledge of Canadian employment laws is preferred. Experience advising management of large companies is desired. Experience assessing worker classifications, including strong working knowledge of the FLSA and independent contractor laws is a plus. In-depth knowledge of labor and employment law across the US is essential.
