Regional Policy Analyst - Criminal Justice Reform The candidate will oversee firm’s criminal justice policy analysis in our states, ensuring high-quality data analyses, development of evidence-based policy options, and effective public and policy-maker education efforts aimed at changing state law, policy and practice. Will conduct firm’s criminal justice policy research, producing high-impact publications (reports, white papers, etc.) related to trends in criminal justice and evaluations of policy reforms. Collaborate with the Deputy Legal Director, state-based Senior Supervising Attorneys, and state-based Policy Counsels to identify needs, develop strategies, and implement work-plans. Identify or create opportunities in county and state governments to improve the administration of the justice system. Establish baselines, monitor implementation, and track the impact of reforms. In collaboration with the Deputy Legal Director, Senior Supervising Attorneys, and Policy Counsels, cultivate productive relationships and communication with a wide range of constituencies interested in criminal justice reform, including policy-makers, corrections officials, researchers and advocates. In coordination with Deputy Legal Director, state-based Senior Supervising Attorneys, and state-based Policy Counsels, coordinate and facilitate meetings and collaboration with key stakeholders, agency leadership and practitioners to consider and design new approaches to the states’ criminal justice challenges. Maintain and continue to develop an understanding of emerging criminal justice issues by monitoring publications and participating in conferences, seminars and other professional development activities. Collaborate with the Deputy Legal Director, state-based Senior Supervising Attorneys, state-based Policy Counsels, and the Communications Department to develop communication strategies around campaigns and serve as spokesperson upon request. Communicate regularly with firm staff across the southern region about campaigns and strategies. Represent firm in various fora, including before community groups, legislatures, and state agencies. Comply with all federal and state lobbying and ethical rules and requirements. Other duties as may be assigned to meet firm needs.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should preferably have bachelor’s degree and an advanced degree in public policy, law, or other relevant field. Should have 7+ years of experience in public policy, with demonstrated knowledge of at least one of the following areas: sentencing, community corrections, prisons and jails, pretrial, courts, law enforcement, prosecution, criminal defense, and/or immigrant detention. Experience working with senior policy-makers, corrections officials, researchers and other stakeholders is strongly preferred. Should have strong research and analytical skills applied to public policy issues, including an ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue. Facility with data, including gathering data, constructing and managing databases, conducting data analyses, and improving data quality is strongly preferred. A keen understanding of the importance of rigorous, timely, and policy-relevant research; experience undertaking and managing such research; and disseminating it effectively to policymakers, the media, and the public strongly preferred. Experience convening groups of policy-makers, researchers, and other professionals, and supporting their efforts to reach consensus and move toward is a desired outcome. Experience developing and moving complex projects forward with a high degree of independence within a creative, fast-paced, action-oriented and collegial environment is essential. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including maturity, keen judgment, the ability to facilitate challenging conversations quickly read interpersonal dynamics and the ability to work with people from a wide array of backgrounds and perspectives and across projects. Proficiency in facilitating strategic meetings with high-level stakeholders is essential. Must have experience working with diverse stakeholders to build consensus and sustain momentum around reforms.
