Assistant General Counsel, Intellectual Property Duties : Reports to the Manager of Intellectual Property Legal Services and will work with management and staff at all levels within firm's and have primary interface with the Technology Deployment and Outreach (TDO) Director, TDO staff, and research staff. Expected to work with TDO and other firm's Directorates to develop and deliver an intellectual property and research strategy that advances, promotes, and accomplishes the firm's mission. Working with the TDO Director and TDO staff to provide advice and counsel with respect to firm's intellectual property and technology transfer strategies. Working with all levels of firm's management and staff to address concerns and issues that may arise. Leading efforts to represent Battelle in matters involving litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitrations, mediations, investigations, and other proceedings. Retaining, monitoring, and working with outside counsel as needed and in compliance with applicable rules and procedures. Contributing to technology transfer strategies and means for strategy accomplishment. Participating on multi-disciplinary teams to address issues and develop strategies that accomplish the firm's mission. Preparation and prosecution of domestic and international patent applications. Identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and assuring legal compliance. Researching and analyzing case law, statutes, and regulations as well as drafting appropriate legal guidance. Working with the Office of General Counsel team to provide legal support necessary to properly represent Battelle and its efforts to successfully accomplish the firm's mission.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification : The candidate should have Juris doctor from an accredited law school and 12+ years of substantive intellectual property law experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm.
Preferred Qualification : Admission to the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) or eligible for admission (admission to the WSBA will be required within one year of employment). Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Demonstrated advanced analytical, communication, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to participate in, form, and lead teams. Excellence in preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications. Experience in negotiating, drafting, and emplacing various forms of agreements and contracts, e.g., intellectual property licenses, contracts supporting research activities, etc. Experience performing legal research and drafting legal guidance. Significant experience drafting and implementing complex settlements, contractual agreements, and employer policy documents. Direct experience with litigation, alternative dispute resolution, and administrative proceedings. Strong knowledge of National Laboratories and the Department of Energy. Experience working in complex science and technology environments.
