Legal Assistant III, Labor and Industries Division The candidate: Schedules and coordinates pre-hearing conferences or depositions for lawsuits including attorneys, experts, clients and court reporters; makes all arrangements for depositions and prepares relevant documents including notices, subpoenas, and vouchers for witness fees and court reporters. Arranges for interpreters as needed. Assists attorneys in preparing for trials and court proceedings. Investigates the facts of cases and ensures that all relevant information is considered. Identifies appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other materials for assigned cases. Prepares, serves and files motions, pleadings, discovery (both propounded and responsive) and accompanying correspondence in compliance with court rules. Organizes and prepares documents for use during trial and administrative hearing such as jury instructions, exhibits and trial notebooks. Ensures the proper and timely filing and serving of legal pleadings in the appropriate courts and on the various parties. Performs proofreading of documents making corrections for spelling, grammar, punctuation and format per agency style guidelines. Independently verifies accuracy of citations and quotation information in briefs. Reviews incoming documents to determine their relevance and any actions needed. Calculates and enters essential case data into the case management system as per agency and divisional business rules and in accordance with office Critical Events Policy and established office procedures; updates information such as documents and litigation and critical dates into CMS; uses Outlook calendar program to track and tickle litigation and critical dates. Updates and maintains attorney Outlook calendar with conference, hearing, meeting, deposition and trial dates and times.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have the following qualifications: Should have High School diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent; or One year as a Legal Assistant 2; or a two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field of study plus 2 years of legal office experience. Must have Bachelor's degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.
