Criminal Defense Practice Legal Intern 1L - Summer 2018 The candidate provides comprehensive, holistic representation of indigent clients who are currently charged with a crime in New York City. Cases handled in the criminal defense trial offices range in seriousness from disorderly conduct to first degree murder. Handles all aspects of representation including arraignments, motions practice, and trials. Interns assigned to the Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) represent felony defendants seeking sentence reduction and misdemeanor defendants seeking dismissal of the accusatory instrument; interns also provide parole advocacy for inmates serving lengthy (25+ yrs) prison terms. Assists CDP attorney who handle all aspects of criminal defense from arraignment through trial as well as through appeals. Responsible for client counseling, preparing motions, please negotiations, directing investigations, interviewing witnesses, referring cases for social work intervention, preparing for and conducting hearings and trials, and handling proceedings in Criminal Court and Supreme Court related to their clients' criminal cases.
