Criminal Defense Practice Supervising Attorney (Citywide) Duties/Responsibilities: The Supervising Attorneys lead a dedicated and dynamic team of attorneys, investigators and paralegals who represent the clients of the Criminal Defense Practice. Directly mentor, train, and supervise staff in the daily provision of zealous representation. Duties include, observing hearings and trials, training new lawyers and law students, second-chairing hearings and trials, and evaluating client services. Supervising Attorneys generally carry a small caseload.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: New York State Bar admission (or ability to waive into New York State from another jurisdiction). 5 years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, social and racial justice, and equity. Experience as a first chair in felony hearings and trials. Knowledge of felony sentencing, mitigation, and alternatives to detention and incarceration. Experience with direct and cross examination of expert witnesses. Knowledge of relevant New York State laws including evidence laws, criminal and constitutional laws, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles contained in the Rules of Professional Conduct. Excellent interpersonal coaching and development skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of attorneys with varying skill levels. Ability to challenge others to seek innovative and creative approaches to advocacy and to provide effective performance feedback and evaluation to encourage ongoing development.
