Staff Attorney Duties: Represents immigrants in legal programs, including asylum-seekers and vulnerable immigrants who are afraid to return to their countries of origin, on applications for asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas, T visas, and VAWA. Develops cases and represents such clients before the New York Family Courts, Asylum Office, Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals, and U.S. Court of Appeals; such activities will be under the direct supervision and guidance of the Supervising Attorney. Conducts intake of new cases and recommend whether should accept or decline the case based on priorities. Participates in U.S. Legal Protection staff meetings, trainings and case review. Provides support to affiliate NY’s legal activities for adjustment of status and citizenship for resettled refugees when needed. Liaises with wraparound support volunteer program to facilitate the matching of trained volunteers with your legal clients in furtherance of mission to provide holistic legal services to clients. Assists volunteer coordinator in identifying appropriate referrals for your clients to social service agencies as well as opportunities for employment, education, and career advancement. Responds to enquiries about immigration law and procedures from individuals, organizations and cooperating agencies. Attends conferences and lectures and otherwise stay informed of current developments in immigration law and procedure. Participates in local advocacy and information-sharing with other non-profits through meetings, list-serves and referrals. Maintains records in compliance with reporting requirements of any and all grants or agreements.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: JD Degree and New York bar admission. 3+ years with immigration law and practice. Fluency in Russian preferred; Spanish fluency a plus. Experience in family court preferred. Excellent analytical, writing and oral skills. Ability to work with clients if a range of backgrounds, with sensitivity to culture, trauma history, age and other vulnerabilities. Ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
