Job Overview: A law firm in Raleigh, NC, is seeking a Patent Engineer, Scientist, or Agent with a minimum of 2+ years of patent drafting and prosecution experience, preferably with expertise in optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, and microscopy systems and imaging techniques. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optics, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering, focusing on electrical or software applications.

Duties:

  • Draft patent applications and prosecute patents, focusing on optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, microscopy systems, and imaging techniques.
  • Manage patent portfolios, including portfolio development, maintenance, and strategic counseling.
  • Conduct patent analysis and opinions of counsel, including freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement analyses.
  • As necessary, participate in inter partes reviews (IPRs) and other post-grant proceedings.
  • Stay updated on new developments in patent law and industry trends.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optics, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering (with an electrical or software focus).
  • 2+ years of patent drafting and prosecution experience at a law firm or in-house.
  • Experience in optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, or microscopy systems and imaging techniques preferred.
  • Experience with software and AI is a plus.
  • Graduate-level experience or an advanced technical degree is advantageous.
  • Involvement with patent analysis/opinions of counsel and IPRs is a plus.
  • Admission to the USPTO is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and embrace new skills and best practices.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively within a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to foster teamwork at all firm levels.
