Assistant County Attorney Duties: The candidate assists the County Attorney representing the County in all civil matters in which the County has an interest and representing the State or County in the criminal prosecution of violations of State Law or County Law. Establishes a positive public relations image of the County through: the effective handling of incoming telephone calls; personal contact with other employees, citizens, and elected officials; and providing assistance of the highest quality to County citizens. Assists the County Attorney in performing the approximately seventy-seven statutory duties set out in Section 331.756 of the Code of Iowa in addition to those duties set out in other sections of the Code of Iowa. Enforces State Laws and County Ordinances in Webster County including the direct prosecution of felony and misdemeanor charges and assisting other law enforcement agencies in the investigation of crimes and the preparation of charges. Represents applicants in mental commitment proceeding under Chapter 229 of the Code of Iowa and applications in mental retardation proceedings under Chapter 222 of the Code of Iowa. Represents the State of Iowa in Juvenile Court proceeding under Chapter 232 of Iowa Code including CINA and Delinquency cases. Represents the elected and appointed officials and departments of the County in civil matters, including giving legal advice or written opinions to the Board of Supervisors and other County and Township Officers on any matter in which the State, County or Township might have an interest. Represents the County in civil matters including such matters as tort cases, tax appeals, tax sales, condemnation cases and the sale or purchase of county property.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification: The candidate should have Juris Doctor Degree. Criminal law and trial advocacy in law school is preferred. Experience in civil and criminal law is preferred. Must be admitted by the Iowa Supreme Court to practice law. Knowledge in the law is essential. Good legal research and writing skill is essential. Good oral and written communication and advocacy skill is essential.
