PDO Attorney The candidate will provide legal services to indigent defendants and respondents in criminal felony, misdemeanor, juvenile, and certain civil proceedings as appointed by the court. Prepare written motions, briefs, orders, and other legal documents. Provide legal representation to adult indigent defendants in criminal cases. Provide legal representation to indigent petitioned persons in civil involuntary commitment and involuntary treatment cases. Provide legal representation to indigent petitioned persons in civil sexually violent commitments. Conduct adversarial hearings including bench and jury trials. Negotiate and enter pleas by reviewing charges, police reports, criminal complaints and records. Prepare orders for court supervision, conditional discharge, or probation. Instruct clients how to set up services to comply with sentencing requirements. Prepare for trial by notifying and reviewing witnesses and clients. Appear in court with criminal defendants on a daily basis and on certain weekends and holidays. Conduct legal research. Operate office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, phone systems, and use computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications. Interacts with staff, elected officials and the general public in person or by telephone in order to respond to inquiries, receive complaints, and resolve problems. Performing data entry using word processing, spreadsheet or database commands and formats material as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have Juris Doctorate degree and member of State Bar Association. Should have knowledge of: Methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report presentation; Principles, practices, and procedures of litigation; Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology; Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar; Computer applications related to the work. Skill in following is needed: Researching, compiling, and summarizing a variety of informational data and materials; Arguing persuasively before a judge and/or jury; Independently assimilating facts and drawing sound conclusions; Speaking effectively before public groups and responding to questions; Reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional periodicals and journals, technical procedures, and government regulations, statutes, laws, and codes; Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions; Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction; Operating and routine maintenance of general office machines such as copiers, facsimile machines, telephone systems, and two-way radio base stations; Preparing moderately complex documents; Accurately proofreading copy with accompanying knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling; Performing basic mathematical computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; Performing data entry using word processing, spreadsheet or database commands and formats material as required.c
