Assistant Public Defender II / Attorney Duties: Handle trial and appellate cases. Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. Responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. The attorney will also be responsible for cases appealed to the Court of Appeals or Supreme Court of Virginia.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification : Must have thorough knowledge of criminal law, criminal defense procedures, court practices and procedures, legal codes and precedents, client file maintenance, internet search methods, and Virginia Criminal Law. Must have thorough familiarization with Constitutional Law & Standards of Practice for Indigent Defense Representation. Must have 4+ years of prior experience representing indigent defendants as an Assistant Public Defender in a Public Defender Office or as court-appointed counsel is a minimum qualification. Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission are required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and remain organized. Prior experience working for a Public Defender office and Spanish language proficiency preferred.
