DUTIES: In support of the mission and values of the Attorney General's Office and under general direction, supports Assistant Attorneys General by performing complex litigation support and entry-level paralegal support. May train, lead or mentor lower level staff and serves as a resource for staff regarding technical legal assignments. Performs complex legal support functions such as: composes, formats, proofreads, prepares, serves and files pleadings, motions, briefs and other legal documents meeting specific time requirements, court schedules, and confirmation procedures. Prepares initial responsive pleadings and correspondence in a civil lawsuit, subsequent answer and jury demand, discovery pleadings, both propounded and responsive, such as interrogatories and requests for production; motions, affidavits, briefs, responses, and proposed orders, as well as other documents required by court rule. Checks legal citations and reference and Shepardizes/Westchecks case citations. Conducts limited legal research on specific issues, utilizing the law library and court rules. Obtains due dates from court documents or court rules and keeps tickle calendar; keeps attorney, investigator and paralegal informed of approaching due dates. Schedules depositions and hearings, and makes arrangements with court reporters, conference rooms, and travel reservations. Obtains medical, employment, or other records using appropriate legal means, such as releases and setting records depositions. Receives, reads, and dockets or supervises computerized docketing of incoming mail, retaining and independently composing answers to procedural correspondence for attorney's signature and routes balance to attorney, calling attention to urgent items. Dockets or delegates computerized docketing for all outgoing mail and determines most cost effective and expeditious means of delivery and proof of service, in state and out of state. Analyzes factual information contained in discovery materials and advises attorney on persons who should be deposed and documents that should be obtained. Locates witnesses by searching discovery records, telephoning or checking other sources of information. Composes, organizes and enters factual information and documents related to litigation into computer databases. Logs and assists with organization and preparation of large volumes of documents related to litigation. Identifies, compiles and prepares documents for discovery and trial. Prepares, organizes and assembles trial materials, including trial notebooks, trial briefs, jury instructions, exhibits, courtroom aids, pre- and post-trial motions. Assists attorneys during trial within the office and in the courtroom as requested.

Qualification and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and 4 years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent;

Option 2: 1 year as a Legal Assistant 2;

Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field of study plus 2 years of legal office experience. A Bachelor's degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.
