Advocacy Director
The candidate will focus on state legislative and executive branch advocacy as well as engaging with administrative agencies, local governments, and ballot measure campaigns. Design and implement a legislative and policy agenda at the state and local levels to advance ACLU-LA’s civil liberties and civil rights priorities. Execute ACLU-LA’s legislative agenda utilizing appropriate strategies and tactics, including lobbying members on both sides of the aisle of the Louisiana State Legislature, their staff and the governor’s office; Take an active role in creating, participating, and securing collaboration between ACLU-LA and a diverse range of coalition partners to ensure successful policy outcomes through effective lobbying and organizing strategies. Build trusted relationships with elected and appointed officials, agency decision-makers, the governor’s office, lobbyists and community stakeholders from across the political spectrum by finding the best messenger, bringing together unlikely allies, bolstering efforts with grassroots support, and providing clear, fact-based analysis and resources. Coordinate and collaborate with ACLU-LA staff to build and implement effective multi- disciplinary and integrated advocacy policy initiatives, involving a combination of policy, legal, communications, public education and organizing strategies. Represent ACLU-LA in various community and stakeholder groups, build and lead coalitions with diverse stakeholders to advance shared policy goals, and work in partnership with other organizations. Facilitate research and drafting of legislation and amendments that advance key policies for ACLU-LA. Prepare written materials in collaboration with the communications director, including legislative testimony, action alerts, talking points, issues briefs, policy reports, and website content. Design and maintain clear and quantifiable systems for tracking policy progress in and out of session. Work collaboratively with the national ACLU and other ACLU affiliates to advance nationwide policy campaigns. Perform other related duties as assigned by the executive director. BA required. Graduate degree and/or law degree preferred and 3 years of state or national legislative, political or policy advocacy work. Must have experience writing actionable plans around long and short-term goals built with strict timelines and measurable progress indicators that generated real outcomes. Should have familiarity and experience applying an expansive toolbox of strategies to move decision-makers and voters, including paid and earned media, message testing, field organizing, online activism, constituent engagement, etc. Must have understanding of campaign planning, roles, communications, and coordination.
