Legal Intern
The candidate will be responsible for: Conducts in depth research on open contracts and summarize them for use by operational divisions. Conducts research to assist attorneys on open legal issues using resources such as electronic media, periodicals, and other legal references. Under the guidance of the attorneys conducts legal research in preparing for litigation, supporting legal decisions, and identifying precedents relating to specific issues. Reviews current and pending developments in not-for-profit laws and regulations. Prepares memoranda of research findings for attorneys. With supervisor's guidance, processes incoming legal actions served upon the litigants in court cases i.e. motor vehicle occurrences including subpoenas, court orders, and wage deduction orders. Reviews documentation to determine deadlines and to ensure conformity with legal requirements. Assists attorneys in preparing, processing, and completing legal instruments and documents relating to banking transactions including loan agreements, security agreements, and leases. Assists the attorneys with the document language by preparing and submitting drafts for approval. Prepares appropriate files and indexes documentation that will be distributed to all parties involved in transactions. Interacts with attorneys and others outside the agency and other parties as required to process documentation and conduct legal research. Must have knowledge of legal terminology usually acquired through one or two years of course work is required to prepare and process legal documents. Organizational and analytical skills are required to conduct legal research. Demonstrate professional conduct at all times. Follow the code of conduct and Agency expectations as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Complete Tuberculosis screening as per New York State regulation. Must have strong oral and written communication skills. Must have completed at least 1 year at an accredited law school.
