Patent Trademark Associate (Part Time) Candidates who want to assist a friendly and close-knit team that has been working together for several years in a busy San Diego-based intellectual property practice that handles all patent and trademark matters and transactions. Will involve handling overflow of patent application preparation and patent prosecution involving innovations in large molecule therapeutics, small molecule therapeutics, and mRNA-based vaccines.
Qualification and Experience Requirements: Bachelor’s degree with significant scientific experience, Master’s degree, or Ph.D in Molecular Biology or Biochemistry or related field. Registered to practice before the USPTO. 3+ years' experience drafting patent applications concerning small molecule pharmaceuticals, antibody-technology based therapeutics, cell therapies including CAR-based therapies and other gene therapies, and/or mRNA-based vaccines. Willingness to handle (or learn) patent issues spanning across a variety of life-sciences related technical subject matter, including molecular biology- and organic chemistry-based issues. Excellent judgment and communication (verbal and written) skills. Experience working in a collaborative team environment and with company-based scientific personnel. Must have the experience and aptitude to comfortably work remotely and independently and have access to personal space to do so. There will be no formal full-time physical office. Must be adept with major MS Office products and have a familiarity and flexibility with working in a law firm environment, including working with document management and billing platforms and protocols. Must also be comfortable with revisions and approval of all work product and correspondence for a trial period by the lead partner and paralegals. Mentorship, work with other attorneys at the firm, and career and practice development opportunities are also present. Any level of experience will be considered in view of the requirements and beneficial qualities listed for the position. Personal fit within the existing group is a threshold evaluation criterion. Additional helpful qualities: Admission to a State bar or the District of Columbia bar. Experience with USPTO requirements for nucleic acid and amino acid sequence listings. Entrepreneurial mindset, personability, and creativity; sense of humor is also beneficial. Strong legal reasoning. Time Requirements: 10-20 hours per week, with the opportunity to increase based on productivity.
