Senior Associate, Legal Affairs Responsibilities: Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of agreements in connection with work and mission (e.g. fee-for-service contracts and incoming/outgoing grants). Review and advise on institutional compliance with new and existing laws. Serve as one of two primary subject matter experts and act as system administrator for new departmental document management program. Support specific programmatic projects and initiatives as needed. Collaborate jointly with the Officer, Legal Affairs on the review and processing of state charitable registration renewal forms. Maintain a database of states where Pew is registered to do business and file state annual reports. Identify and assess legal, business and reputational risks to the organization. Manage Legal Affair’s compliance with Pew’s conflict of interest policy, including reviewing and responding to new hire conflict of interest forms and to Pew’s annual staff conflict of interest survey. Maintain and update the database of staff affiliations used by Pew’s procurement department. Work as important member of the Legal Affairs team responsible for the opening of new foreign offices. Perform code of conduct training for incoming staff. Update and maintain document retention policy and chart. Work on trainings issued by legal and compliance staff. Manage other projects for the Legal Affairs department as requested. Perform legal and internet research and assist department in answering legal requests from various internal clients. Project manage department projects as assigned. Participate in activities and meetings and perform other tasks as assigned, including, for example, serving on institution-wide committees. Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned. Attend professional development seminars and continuing professional education training to increase knowledge and remain properly informed of legal and regulatory issues.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: JD Degree required. 4+ years of experience, of which 2 years must be relevant legal experience. Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate a broad range of contractual agreements required. Tax-exempt organization experience, law firm background and/or in-house experience at a public charity or private foundation preferred. Demonstrated success in analyzing and advising clients about complex legal and factual issues. Skill in interpreting applicable international, federal, state and local laws, regulations, and ethics rules. Ability to understand Pew’s goals and to counsel staff on how to achieve those goals, consistent with informed and properly mitigated legal and business risk. Strong client service skills and the ability to: resolve problems creatively and effectively; identify underlying issues in complex situations; recognize patterns and trends; and apply relevant expertise and experience to diverse legal questions. Experience and skill leading meetings and working on teams with non-legal professionals. Exemplary written and oral communications skills, including the ability to summarize issues and the means to address them. Leadership skills, seasoned judgment, high integrity and the ability to learn quickly, gain credibility and influence the organization. Confidence, with strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to develop productive relationships at all levels, establish trust and provide thoughtful counsel. Licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia or eligible for such admission promptly upon hiring. Collegial personality and ability to work cooperatively with diverse teams of professionals. Strong research skills. Proficiency with LexisNexis. Strong project management and organizational skills, ability to set priorities, organize time and identify resources for projects. Skilled in software applications including databases, spreadsheets, and presentation media; proficient in creating and manipulating Excel spreadsheets.
