ProfileLegal Intern The candidate will be performing legal and factual research; preparing legal memoranda, participating in the office's program for collecting civil penalties that have been assessed against violators of the city code (this work includes some courtroom activity); assisting in the collection of city claims against third parties; and assisting in the office's child abuse and neglect work in the Alexandria Juvenile Court. Will bring some knowledge of common, State and Federal law, and precedent court decisions and some knowledge of legal research procedures. Conducts legal research and writing. Actively participates in court proceedings with supervising attorneys-including but not limited to trials, dispositions, and case reviews. Prepares cases for advisement of rights hearing, including communicating with defense attorneys and officers to set trial dates. Assists attorneys in preparation for trial, including gathering necessary documentation, drafting subpoenas, obtaining certified copies of court orders, and summarizing case files. Drafts and files motions and orders. Must either be enrolled in an accredited college/university and have completed at least two years of academic coursework (60 credit hours or equivalency); have earned a Bachelor's or master's degree within the previous two years; or currently enrolled in an advanced degree program from an accredited college/university; with a beginning, moderate, or intermediate proficiency in MS Office Suite reflective of their tier of education. Should preferably have strong academic record, excellent writing, communication skills, and legal research skills. Should have completed their second year of law school and/or third year of evening law school. Deadline: 04/25/18
