ProfileNetwork Technical Legal Advisor Duties: Provides technical assistance and â€œbest practicesâ€ training in asylum and immigration representation for Society legal staff, Societyâ€™ national pro bono network, and Societyâ€™ affiliate legal staff on a wide range of immigration law and procedures. In coordination with Societyâ€™ National Pro Bono Program Manager and local Pro Bono Coordinating Attorneys, provides legal trainings for pro bono attorneys recruited through HQ in Silver Spring, MD, and for pro bono attorneys recruited through Societyâ€™ affiliate network. Trainings provided will be on topics ranging from asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visa, T visa, citizenship, and rapid response trainings on credible/reasonable fear representation and initial screenings for relief. Designs and implements a training curriculum for HIASâ€™ pilot cohort of Border Fellows and provides intensive support for the Fellows throughout their years of service. With assistance from IT, designs and implements an online technical assistance hub for affiliate offices to access written training materials, recorded webinars and live trainings for their pro bono networks. Provides ongoing mentoring and support for pro bono attorneys recruited through Society affiliate offices who have taken on cases for full representation through affiliate offices that need pro bono coordinating capacity. Networks with national initiatives to support immigrant children and families, leading HIASâ€™ work in this area as a technical expert. Responds to enquiries about immigration law and procedures from Society staff and affiliate staff, as well as external individuals, organizations and cooperating agencies. Attend conferences, lectures, government agency stakeholder meetings, and otherwise stay informed of current developments in immigration law and procedure.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree and state bar admission in any state. 8+ years of experience with immigration law and practice; experience with asylum, detention work, unaccompanied childrenâ€™s cases including Special Immigrant Juvenile status, U visas, T visas and credible fear representation preferred. Fluency in Spanish, French or Amharic preferred. Excellent public speaking and project management experience. Ability to work with attorneys and clients from a wide range of backgrounds with sensitivity to culture, trauma history, age and other vulnerabilities. Some knowledge of Judaism and/ or the Jewish community, culture and issues is a plus. Ability to understand and work within law firm culture and directly with pro bono attorneys. Must be innovative, self-directed and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
