Director of Conflicts Provide leadership, management and strategic direction for the Firm’s conflicts clearance function reporting directly to the Firm’s General Counsel. Work closely with the Firm’s Office of the General Counsel and the Firm’s administrative departments (e.g., Finance, Information Technology, Marketing, Information Management, Client Intake, etc.) in the assessment, design, and implementation of policies, procedures and technology for client/matter assessment and conflicts analysis/resolution (collectively, the “Conflicts Process”) to ensure firm is in alignment with industry best practices as well as continually improving service, accuracy, value, turnaround time and cost effectiveness. Ensures department intranet site is continually updated to provide accurate information on relevant departmental policies and procedures, forms, department contact information. Supervise, develop and train personnel within the Conflicts function, including team managers, conflicts counsel and administrative staff, to ensure: service standards are met; mechanisms are established to monitor productivity and service; and statistical information is generated and provided to General Counsel and/or COO on a monthly/quarterly basis. Prepare and maintain department budget, in conjunction with the Director of New Business Intake, with a focus on compensation, operations and project budgets. Manage department projects and requests to ensure they are on budget, on time, and are meeting the objectives as laid out by the General Counsel and/or COO. Lead and participate in routine meetings with managers and conflicts team members to ensure accurate knowledge of departmental process, policies and staffing changes in the department or Firm. Oversee and lead training efforts for all new lawyers and other firm personnel on departmental policies and procedures. Oversee conflicts and perform identification and resolution processes for new business intake, lateral lawyer hires (including partners, associates, counsel, contract and project attorneys), and administrative staff hires to ensure efficient and accurate work product is generated by conflicts team. Analyze client worthiness, which requires current (and continually updated) knowledge of relevant legal, ethical, and risk management rules. Supervise and assist as needed with drafting, implementing, monitoring, enhancing and improving processes and systems for maintaining and tracking conflict waivers and ethical walls. Communicate effectively with Firm attorneys and staff regarding conflict analysis and resolution issues. Acquire and maintain a thorough knowledge of the overall business intake process and oversee (in conjunction with the Director of Intake) the education and monitoring of the Firm’s workforce relating thereto. Escalate sensitive or difficult issues to the Firm’s General Counsel. Ensure accuracy of supported systems to ensure readiness for internal and external audits. Ensures that all daily and weekly departmental reports are generated in a timely and accurate manner. Assists with gathering data and completing the Firm’s malpractice insurance application. Assists as needed with Departing Lawyer file transfer protocols, including a review of requests to transfer files to clients/new lawyers and their related files. Maintains and updates Conflicts and Risk Management based policies in the Firm Attorney & Employee Manuals. Assists with the implementation and monitoring of Litigation Holds, as needed. Works with General Counsel & Associate General Counsels on risk management and loss prevention related duties, as needed. Plans quarterly Continuing Legal Education classes which are sponsored by the Office of the General Counsel. Assist with special projects regarding conflicts and business intake. Attend operations meetings to discuss intake and conflict related matters. Perform other reasonable tasks requested by the Firmwide Managing Partner or other members of Senior Management.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: JD Degree required; licensed attorney in good standing in a jurisdiction in which the firm practices. 5 years of progressive experience in related area required. Experience in a large law firm setting is desired. Strong research and analytical skills. Comprehensive working knowledge of relevant legal, ethical, and risk management rules. Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities and tight deadline pressures. Substantial experience leading company-wide initiatives within a multi-office setting, preferably in a professional services firm environment required. Must have strong leadership, management and communications skills with thorough knowledge of risk management. Must have strong customer service and problem-resolution orientation with the ability to develop, propose and implement practical solutions. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, ability to keep records, analyze data and provide recommendations. Must be able to effectively communicate (both orally and in writing) with attorneys and all levels of staff. Must be able to meet deadlines and keep others informed of work progress and timetables. Must be team-oriented and address problems and issues constructively to find practical and mutually acceptable business solutions.
