CPS Parent Helpline Staff Attorney Duties: Respond to the caller’s CPS questions in a patient, compassionate, culturally sensitive and trauma-informed manner. Explain the limited nature of services that can be offered to hotline callers. Analyze the caller’s problem, and answer questions related to the CPS process, refer callers to appropriate resources that might assist them with their case. Instruct clients how to complete legal tasks. Conduct the legal research and factual investigation needed to adequately perform the tasks undertaken on behalf of the caller. Provide high quality legal assistance and education to eligible clients and client organizations. Comply with all regulations, grant requirements, and internal operating and personnel policies. Ensure that all client, project, and computer files are maintained in an orderly manner. Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards as a member of the State Bar and stay current with updates and changes to the law. Adhere to the ABA Standards for Civil Legal Services Providers. Maintain the highest level of professionalism when working with other staff, other Legal Aid programs, governmental and funding entities, and the public. Embrace and support overall mission, standards, policies, and confidentiality requirements. Ensure that all appointments and deadlines are calendared and timely executed with sufficient time dedicated for management approval. Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Management and the CPS Parent Helpline Managing Attorney. Demonstrate proficiency with relevant parts of the law related to child welfare, including family law, conservatorship, access, child support, enforcement of court orders and judgments, paternity, termination, adoption, negotiation and mediation. Have the ability to type with speed and accuracy and to utilize office software and case management systems. Demonstrate proficiency with case management system, Adobe software, and Microsoft Office software, social media tools, and the ability to learn new technologies to carry out job functions. Promptly provide all information needed/requested for Parent Helpline reporting. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training, planning, assigning and directing the work of others (paralegals, support staff, volunteers and interns). Follow policy and procedures when conducting intake and assisting callers, and to stay current with all changes to family law. CPS Parent Helpline attorneys will be evaluated on their legal skills, their ability to serve clients in a professional, respectful manner, and their productivity levels. Work is reviewed by the Managing Attorney, who will regularly conduct case reviews. Expected to work with the Managing Attorney to correct any legal or intake problems.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree and licensure by the Supreme Court of Texas with 3+ years' CPS experience, as a caseworker or as an attorney representing parents, children or the state in CPS cases.
