Senior Business Development Manager

The Marketing Department at Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Senior Business Development Manager.  This position will be located in the Washington, DC office.  The Senior Business Development Manager will lead the development and implementation of Business Development strategies for the Life Sciences & Healthcare Regulatory practice, as well as the firmwide Life Sciences industry group.  This position serves as the primary liaison between the Practice Group and the Marketing Department, and will work closely with the Practice Group leaders and attorney’s to develop plans, execute pitches and proposals, and manage day-to-day business development activities to ultimately grow revenue and client relationships.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Serving as a trusted advisor to the lawyers in the Life Sciences & Healthcare Regulatory practice group.  Collaborating with the attorneys to develop business plans and marketing strategies to cultivate business.
• Developing and implementing business growth strategies for the Life Sciences industry group. Coordinating and connecting the firmwide industry experience and leading cross-practice efforts to raise visibility and drive business growth in the sector, including client collaboration plans, cross-practice working groups, conferences and events, social media and other strategies.  
• Working to identify trends and opportunities, and develop new business approaches and targeted cross-selling opportunities.  Using Interaction to identify and confirm relationship targets.
• Working with key client teams associated with Life Science Practice and Industry groups.
• Facilitating the integration of lateral partners and counsel into Practice Group.  Coaching new laterals on identifying business opportunities and ensuring execution of their business development plans.
• Managing RFPs, pitches and proposals from initial planning with the attorney team through to final submission. Creating compelling, customized pitch material tailored to specific opportunities.
• Collaborating with Business Development Managers across all practice/industry groups to identify or develop cross-selling opportunities.
• Leading the strategy and execution for directories and awards such as Chambers and other practice-recognition submissions.
• Coordinating with event planning staff to identify, sponsor or create targeted industry conferences, client seminars/webinars, speaking engagements and other special events for Practice and Industry Groups.  
• Identifying matters or issues that are potentially media-worthy for the Media Relations team to implement PR, awards and other media placements for the Life Sciences group.
• Developing and managing Practice and Industry Group budgets.
• Supervising and mentoring assigned Business Development team members on activities including pitch and proposal materials; updates to practice descriptions, experience items and attorney bios; directory submissions and event logistics.
• Generally serving as mentor to more junior BD team members.  Working with Business Development Director and other Senior Managers to identify and facilitate professional growth opportunities for the team.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree required; Masters or J.D. degree a plus.
• Minimum of six years of managerial marketing experience; professional services or law firm background preferred, particularly in the Life Sciences area.
• Knowledge of Business Development process in a Professional Services industry required. 
• Demonstrated experience with key research tools and databases, including experience, billing, client contacts and other web based research tools.
• Ability to strategically maintain financial/budgetary information.
• Proficient in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite and/or related software. Use of InterAction, Foundation, and other Marketing databases will be required.
• Excellent organization and communications skills, both oral and written.
• Persuasive writing skills for presentations, proposals and other marketing materials.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while exhibiting a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high degree of trustworthiness in handling confidential and sensitive information while working under the pressure of deadlines.
• Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
• Experience in budget planning and client account management.
• Strong problem solving skills.
• Exceptional client service both internal and external.
