Criminal Defense Practice Paralegal II-CAB
The candidate will work primarily with plea project attorneys, assisting them in managing their large and active caseloads. Will be taking necessary steps to complete the record on appeal and gathering, completing, or assembling the documents necessary to perfect the appeal, as well as corresponding with clients following felony and misdemeanor conviction. Identifying, locating and acquiring any outstanding case-file material (transcripts, exhibits, reports and court file papers) so that attorneys have a complete record of the trial court proceedings. Retrieving, reviewing and digesting/outlining court files and institutional records. Corresponding with clients regarding the status of their appeals and helping them to execute documents related to their appeals or other post-conviction matters. Maintaining e-folder of recent excessive sentence decisions from the appellate courts. Corresponding with the Division of Parole, correctional facilities and other criminal justice agencies to maintain current contact information for incarcerated clients and those subject to parole/probation supervision, as well as to confirm compliance with supervision and, in the case of successful appeals, correct criminal records. Drafting, assembling and serving or filing routine motions. Updating briefs and other information in LawManager. Other duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have Paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program or Bachelor's degree in relevant field; internal applicants may fulfill this requirement by satisfactorily completing a comprehensive in-house training course appropriate to practice area. Must have excellent writing skills and excellent organizational skills. Must have excellent computer and word processing skills. Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is required. Knowledge of New York criminal law and criminal procedure is strongly desired. Proficiency in a language other than English is desirable.
