Associate General Counsel The candidate will lead compliance reporting efforts and compliance investigations; implements changes in practices and policies through regular monitoring and interpretation of regulatory changes. Serve as an expert in federal and state regulations, privacy laws, academic research compliance, and other higher education compliance areas, such as Title IX and Clery Act. Administer the corporate-wide compliance program according to applicable law, guidance and policies. Administer the corporate-wide conflict of interest program according to applicable law, guidance, and corporate policies. Administer the RFUMS contracts management system; provides general legal advice relating to proposed and executed contracts, including those for University-sponsored events. Provide general legal advice and counsel to the General Counsel and other leaders.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have a JD or equivalent. License to practice as an attorney in Illinois. Should have 5 years of experience as an attorney in the highly regulated sector. Experience in health care compliance, health care operations (quality, risk, etc.), audit, finance, regulatory or public policy development, investigations, information security, or a directly related field. Additional equivalent work experience in a directly related field may be substituted. Knowledge of federal regulation, State law, and institutional policies governing conflicts of interest. Demonstrated superior active listening skills, problem sensing and solving skills, and customer service orientation. Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality. Demonstrated analytical, deductive reasoning, critical thinking, and active learning skills. Demonstrated ability to reliably follow through on assignments, prioritize work, and work under pressure with advanced attention to detail, organization, and thoroughness. Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and other systems for managing files and records. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, state and federal agencies, and private organizations. Ability to interpret various regulatory documents and to accurately respond as required. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to create effective training materials. Experience in higher education compliance, and life science research is preferred. Developed expertise in a specific compliance area: privacy, research, Title IX, and policy development. Hands-on experience in misconduct investigations is preferred. Well-versed in managing ethical concerns in an academic environment. Health care experience is preferred. Certified or willing to become certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or other equivalent compliance certification or Privacy and Security Compliance certification is preferred.
